Truck ABS Service Procedures

Blink codes without a laptop, valve tests with one — the complete service playbook for the lamp that fails inspections.

ABS work splits into two worlds: what you can do roadside with the blink-code sequence, and what needs the factory tool. This guide covers both for Bendix, WABCO and Haldex — the three platforms that cover North American air-braked vehicles.

Blink-code retrieval (no scanner needed)

PlatformRetrieval methodNotes
Bendix EC-60/EC-80Ignition on, press diagnostic switch (or brake-pedal sequence on some installs); count lamp flashesTwo-digit codes, repeated 3× each
WABCO (tractor)ABS lamp blink sequence after ignition cycle with diagnostic switchConfiguration-dependent — varies by OEM install
WABCO/Haldex (trailer)Auxiliary lamp on trailer side; blink sequence at power-upLamp is usually driver-side front corner

The three faults that cause 80% of ABS lamps

  • Wheel-speed sensor gap: sensors push back over time; re-gap to the tone ring (they self-adjust on first drive if installed fully seated).
  • Sensor harness damage: axle-flex zones chafe harnesses — inspect before buying sensors.
  • Modulator valve failure: valve tests with ACom AE or TOOLBOX Plus confirm; replacement is a 30-minute job once confirmed.

Valve and sensor tests with the factory tools

ACom AE actuates each modulator valve individually — the fastest leak-down test available. TOOLBOX Plus does the same on WABCO plus live wheel-speed graphs that make erratic sensors obvious. Both read trailer systems via a $189 PLC adapter through the 7-way — no crawling under trailers.

Trailer ABS specifics

Trailer ABS faults fail the trailer's inspection and the combination's. PLC diagnostics through the 7-way reads Bendix and WABCO trailer modules; Haldex requires its own interface or blink codes. Full platform map on the trailer diagnostics hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will an ABS fault affect braking performance?

Base braking works normally with an ABS fault — you lose anti-lock function only. But the lamp is an inspection violation, and on EBS trailers some faults do affect brake proportioning.

Why does my ABS lamp come on intermittently over bumps?

Classic harness or sensor-gap issue — vibration breaks a marginal connection. Live wheel-speed graphs in ACom/TOOLBOX catch these instantly; static tests miss them.
