INSITE is the reference tool for Cummins regens: it shows every precondition, watches temperatures in real time, and verifies the result afterward. This is the procedure our technicians run on screen-shares every day.
Before you connect
- Park with the exhaust clear of grass, debris and anything heat-sensitive.
- Coolant at 140°F+, fuel above 25%, parking brake set, neutral.
- Resolve any active engine-protection faults first — they block regen initiation.
The procedure
- 1. Connect the adapter (INLINE 8 or USB-Link 3), open INSITE, connect to the ECM.
- 2. Navigate to Aftertreatment → Aftertreatment Diagnostics → DPF Regeneration.
- 3. Review the precondition display — INSITE lists each requirement with pass/fail status.
- 4. Start the regen. Engine RPM rises to ~1,100–1,400; exhaust temps climb past 1,000°F.
- 5. Monitor: DOC inlet temp, DPF inlet temp, soot load percentage. A healthy regen shows soot dropping steadily.
- 6. Completion: RPM returns to idle, soot load resets. Run the Aftertreatment System Test to verify.
- 7. If the truck was in derate, perform the Inducement Reset (Aftertreatment → Reset) after successful completion.
INSITE-specific troubleshooting
| Symptom | INSITE shows | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Regen won't start | Precondition list with the failing item in red | Address that specific item |
| Aborts early | Doser fuel pressure low | Doser valve flow test (INSITE guided) |
| Temps won't climb | DOC inlet temp stuck <500°F | Hydrocarbon doser inspection |
| Soot won't drop | Soot % static despite good temps | DPF removal inspection — face plugging or ash |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can INSITE Lite do a forced regen?
Yes — forced regen, precondition display and inducement reset are all Lite functions. Pro's advantage is diagnostic depth on failed regens, not the regen command itself.
Why does INSITE refuse to start the regen on my X15?
The precondition list tells you exactly why — coolant temp, fuel level, PTO status, or a blocking fault code are the usual items. Screenshot the list and send it to us if the cause isn't obvious.
How do I know the regen actually worked?
Soot load percentage dropping during the cycle and resetting at completion, followed by a clean Aftertreatment System Test. Exhaust temperature behavior alone can be misleading — trust the soot number.
