The VIN is the fastest way to identify what you're actually working on: engine family, emissions generation, model year. This decoder covers the major North American manufacturers — bookmark it, it's free and requires no account.
What the decoder returns
- Make, model, model year (positions 1–3, 10).
- Engine family and displacement where encoded.
- Emissions generation (EPA07/10/13+) — determines aftertreatment type and tool needs.
- Plant and build sequence data.
- Recommended diagnostic platform and connector for the decoded truck.

Decoder supports Freightliner, Kenworth, Peterbilt, Volvo, Mack, International, Western Star, Hino, Isuzu (US-market WMIs).
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the VIN on a commercial truck?
Driver-side door jamb (most common), dash at windshield base, or frame rail on some vocational trucks. The door-jamb sticker also carries axle and tire data worth photographing.
Why doesn't the VIN show my exact engine on some brands?
Some manufacturers encode engine family only at the series level; the full engine ID is on the valve cover tag or in the ECM data. For those cases our compatibility checker asks follow-up questions.
Can I decode a trailer VIN?
Trailer VINs follow a different pattern with less standardization — this decoder focuses on power units. For trailers, the ABS module ID (via the trailer diagnostics path) identifies the brake system.
